Breathing Emergencies

If your pet is struggling to breathe, this is one of the most urgent emergencies we see. Labored breathing, blue gums, choking sounds, or collapse — these all need immediate veterinary attention. Our team has oxygen therapy, intubation equipment, and emergency medications ready to go at all times.

Warning Signs to Watch For

If your pet shows any of these symptoms, call us immediately.

Open-mouth breathing in cats
Loud, labored, or wheezing breaths
Blue or purple gums and tongue
Choking or gagging sounds
Swollen face or throat (allergic reaction)
Collapse or extreme lethargy

How We Treat Breathing Emergencies

We get oxygen flowing first — that's priority one. Nasal cannula, oxygen cage, or intubation depending on severity. Then we figure out why. X-rays show us fluid in the lungs, a collapsed lung, or heart enlargement. Blood work and blood gas analysis tell us how well the organs are getting oxygen. Treatment depends on the cause: bronchodilators for asthma, epinephrine for allergic reactions, chest tubes for pneumothorax, diuretics for fluid buildup.

Why Acting Fast Matters

Brain cells start dying after just 4 minutes without adequate oxygen. A pet that can't breathe properly is in immediate danger. Allergic reactions can close the airway completely in minutes. Pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs) gets worse with every breath. This is not a 'wait and see' situation. If your pet's breathing looks wrong, call us now.
